Introducing the 2004 DC/Baltimore Slam Team

Sonya Renee

Captivating, Crazy and just plain Cool...somebody must be talking about spoken word artist Sonya Renee. Sonya made her debut onto the DC poetry scene in April 2003. Since then, Sonya Renee has performed with artists like Peabo Bryson, Floetry as well as performing at the National March for Women’s Lives in 2004. Sonya Renee’s mixture of humor, reality and a pinch of big black girl sass makes each listener feel like a Saturday afternoon phone call with their best girl friend or baby boo. This year Sonya became the newest team member of the DC/Baltimore National Slam Team.

Droopy Anderson
(pictured below right, w/ team mate Chris)

Droopy is a 20-something well-meaning misfit whose pseudo-clever musings about life as we don't know it have managed to pseudo-cleverly facade themselves as "poetry". The Howard University graduate is the author of two self-published books and two spoken word CDs. Droopy makes the legal portion of his income working as a high school biology teacher in Washington, DC. Droopy is also the host of the "Spit Dat!" open mic at Java Head Cafe in NE DC. When not making plans to take over the world, he is updating his journal on his website, www.brokeballer.com. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Chris August
(pictured above left, w/ team mate Droopy)

Chris August is not comfortable writing about himself in the third person, so no more of that! I am a two time member of the DC/Baltimore slam team and cohost of SLAMicide!, Baltimore’s only nationally certified slam venue. I’ve toured and slammed all over the east coast, southeast and parts of the southwest with my best friend and cohost, “Granma” Dave Schein and am the author of one chapbook. Shoes make me itchy, I dig pajamas and I’m basically a nice guy…you’ll probably like me. Your mom does.

Twain Dooley

Twain Dooley (R: on right) has been a member of the DC/Baltimore Slam team since the turn of the century. He has tickled and confused audiences all along the east coast. He has opened for Amiri Baraka and Jimmy "JJ" Walker, been on stage in the Whitney Museum, National Theatre and his basement. He is a founding member of the Modern Urban Griots, and author of "Plaster Soup" and the the story of his life: "None of This Makes Sense".

DC Slam is Washington, DC's ONLY PSI certified poetry slam venue and the official track to the National Poetry Slam.
